Sri Lanka president’s government to dissolve trade unions’’
A spokesman for the new Sri Lankan president has expressed intentions to do away with the main organized body for workers.
At a public meeting, a prominent candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake had announced that trade unions operating under his party will be abolished.
According to NPP’s Colombo district parliamentary election candidate Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi, this move is intended to create ‘a country without strikes’.
“The history of strikes will come to an end. Against whom are you going to strike? With time, we will dissolve the trade unions operating under this party. Why do we want these trade unions? There is no need.”
When Anura Kumara Dissanaayaka was elected president, Nipuna Arachchi was appointed as an MP by the NPP before the parliament was dissolved.
Claiming that any issue can be resolved through discussions with the government to be, the ex MP added that the country’s children in future will have to be taught what strikes and curfews are. He made these remarks during a public meeting held on 31 October in Bokundara, Kesbewa.
Regional reporters added that Nipuna Arachchi did not make it clear whether laws for the imposition of curfew would also be abolished.
